Abstract

The proliferation of digital media, social networking platforms, and algorithm-driven information systems has transformed the production, circulation, and consumption of Islamic religious knowledge. Traditional models of religious authority are increasingly challenged by the emergence of digital preachers, social media influencers, and AI-assisted religious content, creating new opportunities as well as risks of misinformation and fragmented religious understanding. This study investigates the changing dynamics of digital fatwa, religious authority, and Muslim religious literacy within the algorithmic age from a contemporary Islamic studies perspective. Employing qualitative library research, the study analyzes recent scholarship on digital religion, Islamic authority, media studies, and religious literacy. The findings indicate that religious authority is becoming increasingly decentralized, requiring new models of digital religious literacy that combine theological competence, critical media literacy, ethical digital engagement, and verification of religious information. The study proposes an integrative framework that strengthens the credibility of religious knowledge while encouraging responsible digital participation among Muslim communities. This framework contributes to the development of contemporary Islamic studies by addressing the intersection between digital transformation, religious authority, and ethical knowledge dissemination.
