A WAYANG GOLEK-BASED LEARNING MODEL FOR STRENGTHENING CHARACTER EDUCATION AND LITERACY AMONG ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS: A CASE STUDY AT SDN LEMAH KEMBAR SUMBERASIH PROBOLINGGO

This study aims to examine the implementation of a Wayang Golek-based learning model for strengthening character education and literacy among elementary school students at SDN Lemah Kembar, Sumberasih, Probolinggo. Employing a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through interviews with teachers, documentation, and observations of educational activities utilizing Wayang Golek performances as instructional media. The findings reveal that integrating local cultural heritage into classroom learning creates an engaging and contextual educational environment that enhances students' participation, critical thinking, and literacy engagement. The storytelling embedded in Wayang Golek performances effectively promotes character values such as honesty, responsibility, discipline, cooperation, and respect while increasing students' awareness of social issues, including the importance of education and the prevention of early marriage. The study proposes a Wayang Golek-based learning model consisting of cultural orientation, interactive storytelling, collaborative reflection, literacy activities, and character reinforcement. This model demonstrates that local wisdom can serve as an innovative pedagogical approach for promoting meaningful learning, preserving cultural heritage, and developing students' character and literacy competencies in elementary education
